Microchipping for San Jose and South Bay Pets
If you're like most pet owners, you can't bear to be separated from your beloved pet any longer than necessary. It's probably hard to imagine what you would do if your pet suddenly went missing -- especially if he loses his collar tag somewhere along the way. Luckily, you can make use of the second line of defense to ensure that your lost pet can be traced back to you. It's known as microchipping, and we're proud to provide this service for San Jose and South Bay Pets here at Acacia Pet Clinic.
A Simple, Non-Surgical Process at Our Animal Hospital
Microchipping involves the insertion of a tiny microchip just beneath your pet's skin. Since the chip is small enough to fit inside a hypodermic needle, there's no need for surgery; our veterinaran simply injects the device into your pet's body. The microchip will last for decades because it doesn't require its own power source. Instead, it responds to the beam of an RFID scanner. When an animal worker encounters your pet, a quick pass of the RFID scanner prompts the chip to communicate its information -- a unique ID number that identifies your pet in a national pet registry. From there, it's a simple matter to look up your contact information and let you know that your pet has been found.
The Benefits of Microchipping Your Pet
Many pet owners think that attaching an ID tag to their pet's collar is sufficient to ensure that he can be recovered and identified of he goes missing. Unfortunately, collar tags (and sometimes entire collars) can fall off or be torn away. That's where the microchip proves invaluable as a second form of ID, one that won't ever get separated from your pet. (Even so, you still need to make certain that your pet has a valid collar ID tag since this method remains the primary way most people can identify a lost pet.)
Here's another great reason to consider microchipping for your pet: It works. Statistics show that microchipped dogs and cats are much more likely to be reunited with their owners than animals without microchips. You definitely want your pet to be on the happy side of those numbers!
